Estranged from her family for many years, the 60-something Krisha arrives at her younger sister Robyn’s house for a carefully planned reconciliation over the Thanksgiving holiday, where her mother, other siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and grand-niece have all congregated for a fun-filled weekend. Yet the edgy tension surrounding Krisha’s visit builds steadily, particularly with one of the young men we at first assume to be her nephew, Trey (played by the writer-director-editor-producer of the film, Trey Edward Shults). As the holiday progresses, Krisha’s intentions and psyche reveal a deep streak of self-destructive tendencies that cause havoc with the family dynamic.

Winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at SXSW earlier this year, Shults’ highly personal and compelling, hypnotic drama was also selected for Critic’s Week in Cannes. Shults has drawn comparisons to the work of legendary American independent director John Cassavetes for their mutual use of family members in the cast and a maverick, avant-garde style of shooting favoring characters and scenes that envelop the viewer in both observation and emotion. – Andres Castillo
