Legendary Chilean TV personality Don Francisco will be awarded Miami International Film Festival’s PRECIOUS GEM AWARD in a ceremony that will take place on Sunday, October 25th prior to the screening of The 33.
Don Francisco, one of the world’s most popular Spanish-speaking TV hosts, is widely known for hosting the former variety shows “Sábado Gigante” and “Don Francisco Presenta”.
In the early days following the collapse of the San José copper-gold mine near Copiapó, Chile, Don Francisco travelled to the site of the accident to broadcast live from among the families and townspeople gathered, waiting for word of rescue effort plans. It was Don Francisco’s attention that quickly helped grow the miner’s predicament into a worldwide media event, that contributed to an international rescue effort being formed to help reach the trapped 33 miners.
For Don Francisco’s significant contributions to the story and progress in 2010 of the fate of the trapped Copiapó miners, influences that are cinematically immortalized in The 33. the Festival look forwards to to honoring Don Francisco as the Precious Gem that he is, for all he has done for the Copiapó story.
